Just like when Borat came out in 2006, there is a lot of contrerversy about Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest mockumentry, Brüno. But did Twitter cost him big bucks at the box office??
By Friday morning, things were looking good for Sacha Baron Cohen and his new movie Brüno. After midnight, ticket sales were close to $1.6 million and most Hollywood movie buffs were predicting almost $50 million before the end of the weekend.
Well, by the end of the weekend predictions were wrong. Ticket sales didn’t reach $50 million, but Brüno ended the weekend with still a good $30.4 mill. So whats up with the almost $20 million gap? what is the reason for this large gap in predictions? TIME Magazine is blaming Twitter.
It hasn’t been long since the movie was first released, and Brüno is still being discussed on Twitter and other social networking sites worldwide. Some of the comments and postings are positive ones expressing the humor of the movie, however a large majority of posts are negative, telling other users “not to waste their money” This is the reason TIME Magazine is blaming Twitter for contributing to the box office loss.

It’s a tough call to say whether or not Twitter was to blame. Twitter is a social sharing and networking site. People are going to talk and are entiltled to. Twitter and other social networking sites are just a way of expressing and reinforcing people’s opinions with each other. Of course some people are likley to sway one way or another based on what they hear or see, but people who get influenced by Twitter, are also the people who are influenced by other people´s opinions. Twitter is just another medium.
At the end of the day, isn’t all publicity good publicity???
