Although art has been used in advertising for centuries, it is unique to see a car company commission a work of art and promote it as its main ad campaign for the season. BMW is no stranger to their contributions to the world of art. Over the three decades their cars have been the object of art and design to renowned artists like Alexander Calder, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. It is an interesting strategy that BMW uses to draw attention to their sports cars; to which some people may argue has the design like a work of art itself. Using a car to help create vibrant, modern art piece showcases the artistic and free spirit prowess that the car possesses.

BMW chose to promote their campaign for the Z4 Roadster in cinematic style, along with the documentary style short film that will run on the Discovery HD channel until late June.
External coverage includes airports in 10 key markets with billboards that show the painting headlines such as, “Not all artists are depressed” and “Rarely does the paintbrush rival the painting,” and in cinema advertising (before the trailers start) which is where I first noticed the BMW Z4 “Expression of Joy” campaign.

Art will always find its place within advertising because it adds certain emotions and gives a significant life to an otherwise ordinary product.

Without the art work campaign, the BMW Z4 Roadster would be just another head turning BMW – very fleeting and typical. The art work of Robin Rhode and the special promotion that went into this campaign removes the ethereal aspect of sports car advertising. It adds lasting power in the marketplace and solidifies its place in the art community.

A Sprite (within the context of computer graphics) is a 2 or 3 dimensional image that is integrated into a larger scene. Sprites served as an early optimization technique whos purpose was to keep memory costs low within animations.

Within context of web design, Sprites are often used as background images for items such as form fields or navigational elements. These sprites are moved around to their appropriate position to notify web surfers of mouse overs, errors or other usability clues.

Example sprite:

Myfonts.com just released the list of their hottest fonts of 2008. if you havent checked out their most recent installment at http://new.myfonts.com/

Myfonts.com featured fonts of 2008 can be seen on their January 2009 Newsletter by clicking here.

Myfonts an Internet company located in Cambridge, Massachusetts their focus is creating a great place to find and purchase fonts.

In addition to their extensive font database of great affordable typefaces they also have a font identification service called “what the font“.

What the font lets you upload an image of a logo or typeface and it will scour their database and identify the font being used.

We have used “what the font” to save many long hours browsing Suitcase or Adobe Type Manager looking around for a fontname for someone.

Being able to recognize various Glyphs in the image and their recognition system allows for a great deal of time saving when you have an image from a client with a fontface that you either haven’t used or is buried in your “don’t use” folder.
