Facebook has announced that they will be supporting @mentions in status updates. This is a big deal, considering Twitter was the only social networking site strongly implementing this feature. Facebook is a much bigger audience, and this move will have huge implications - especially against Twitter.
You used to only be able to tag other users in photos, videos, and notes. Now, you can tag friends and other connections, including groups, events, applications, and Pages to your status posts. A drop-down menu appears that allows you to choose who you would like to tag.
When tagged, you will receive a notification and a Wall post that links you to the post you were mentioned in. You also have the option to remove tags of yourself from a post.
It will be interesting to see how companies utilize this feature. Now companies with Facebook pages can directly answer unhappy customers. It’s going to completely change the level of interactions that brands have with their customers.
